Hello
Hi! I’m Kim Woodford, founder of The Live Oak School. I’m an elementary educator with experience teaching Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 1st grade, where I built a deep love for early literacy, strong routines, and the small, supportive steps young learners need to thrive. I’ve also taught upper elementary—currently 4th grade Science and Social Studies in Houston—which has shaped how I help students grow independence, stronger comprehension, and confident problem-solving skills as they get older.
I chose to create my own online micro-school because, over time, I saw a growing need for a learning environment that is more personal, consistent, and responsive to children as individuals. As a certified Texas teacher, I have seen firsthand how much children can thrive when they receive strong instruction, meaningful support, and a learning environment designed to meet their needs.
In traditional public school settings, teachers care deeply and work incredibly hard, but large class sizes, limited flexibility, and constant demands can make it difficult to give every child the time, attention, and customized support they deserve.
I wanted to build something different—an approach that keeps strong academics and high expectations while creating a calmer, more connected learning experience. Moving online allows me to design intentional small-group instruction, provide more individualized feedback, and partner more closely with families. It also creates flexibility for students who thrive with a more focused environment, a personalized pace, and a school day that supports both learning and well-being.
This micro-school was created from a desire to offer children a meaningful alternative: a place where they are truly known, encouraged, and challenged, and where learning feels both purposeful and joyful.
My Story
Before my classroom career, I began my work in state parks as a naturalist, leading educational programs for visitors and school groups. I later became a zookeeper at the Houston Zoo, where I saw firsthand how powerful learning becomes when it’s hands-on, curiosity-driven, and connected to the real world. Those experiences continue to shape how I teach and help me bring meaningful, nature-based connections into learning.
I created The Live Oak School to give families a warm, structured online option with real teaching and real connection—strong academics, clear expectations, and engaging lessons that help students grow. My goal is simple: help children build deep roots in reading, writing, and math, while developing confidence, character, and a genuine love of learning.
